If you want 16 TB total, as you indicated as a future goal, go with 2TB drives instead of the 1TB's. Sticking with RAID 50 is just going to guarantee that you go through this hell again in the future. The performance would be better as well, especially on writes. Building a new RAID 10 with these would give you a much, much safer array and 3.64TB's of space, just over 1TB more than you have now. This approach is likely going to be "Hell On Earth" and result in your starting from scratch anyway. You mentioned buying eight 1TB drives and replacing drives in the current R50 array one by one. Because of this I do not see the chances of a successful rebuild as good at this point. I say this because you currently have had 25% of the drives enter an unhealthy state, or die completely, and the rest are likely not far behind. ![]() IMO at this point I think you are wasting time even thinking about replacing just the failed drives and should be looking at building a brand new RAID 10 array with all new drives. Not that it matters because if the degraded R5 fails the entire array is lost. If I am looking at your screenshots correctly, assuming drives 0-7 comprise one of the RAID 5's and 8-15 the other R5 (not sure how the 2 spares are sprinkled in there though), one half of the RAID 0 is terminally ill and the other half is healthy. You are on the right track, backing up as we speak, and you should not do anything more until you are confident that you have a working backup of the data.
